A Godly Woman (Retreat part 2)

A Proverbs 31 Woman
Proverbs 31: 10-31 (ESV)
The Woman Who Fears the LORD
10An excellent wife who can find?
She is far more precious than jewels.
11The heart of her husband trusts in her,
and he will have no lack of gain.
12She does him good, and not harm,
all the days of her life.
13She seeks wool and flax,
and works with willing hands.
14She is like the ships of the merchant;
she brings her food from afar.
15She rises while it is yet night
and provides food for her household
and portions for her maidens.
16She considers a field and buys it;
with the fruit of her hands she plants a vineyard.
17She dresses herself with strength
and makes her arms strong.
18She perceives that her merchandise is profitable.
Her lamp does not go out at night.
19She puts her hands to the distaff,
and her hands hold the spindle.
20She opens her hand to the poor
and reaches out her hands to the needy.
21She is not afraid of snow for her household,
for all her household are clothed in scarlet.
22She makes bed coverings for herself;
her clothing is fine linen and purple.
23Her husband is known in the gates
when he sits among the elders of the land.
24She makes linen garments and sells them;
she delivers sashes to the merchant.
25 Strength and dignity are her clothing,
and she laughs at the time to come.
26She opens her mouth with wisdom,
and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.
27She looks well to the ways of her household
and does not eat the bread of idleness.
28Her children rise up and call her blessed;
her husband also, and he praises her:
29"Many women have done excellently,
but you surpass them all."
30 Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain,
but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised.
31Give her of the fruit of her hands,
and let her works praise her in the gates.

Characteristics and such...

Her husband trusts her nature (what comes out whenever she's bumped, and yes, God does bump us on purpose) because he's seen it and knows it. (v.11)

Consistent in her nature (i.e. being a godly woman). (v. 12)

Diligent rather than lazy, and she doesn't waste time. (v. 13-17) -That was a big one for me.

Kind, generous (v. 20)

Conscientious dresser, meaning she takes care of her appearance. A wife is a jewel in her husband's crown. She is a creative support for him. (v.22)

Her character (what's inside) makes the outer alive and radiant (v. 25)

"She smiles at the days to come." Her hope is in God. (v. 25)

Measures her words (v. 26)

Respected by her intimate family. (v. 28-29) - I'd never thought about this before, but how important is this and how loved and special do we feel when it is true in our lives?!

Other points that hit home...

I have control over only me. I only control how I respond to what others do that may hurt me, disappoint me, anger me, etc.
And my responses have the potential to bring joy and peace because I've honored God in them (in actions, words, facial expressions, tone, etc).

Goals, I can personally accomplish. I however cannot have a goal that involves someone else doing something.
Desires, may deal with behavior/actions of another person.

Hypocrite (def): someone who acts like someone they are not
Meaning, even when I don't feel like being a godly woman, I'm not being a hypocrite when I act like a godly woman because of who God says I am. God says to live put on "your new self" (Eph 4:24).
What I heard during this part was, "set your minds and hearts and do it, regardless of your feelings." He will change my heart when I obey and nowhere does it say that I can wait until I feel like acting like a godly woman to live out the life of a Godly woman. Ouch. I really need to stop letting my emotions and feelings dictate my actions.

God loves us intimately- look for it in the little things...and probably when you least expect it.

What joy, we are completely holy and set free in Christ!

Unpacking After Fall Retreat

Thoughts
God gives me as much of himself as I want...and no more. I invest my time where I want to and I'm pretty good at justifying spending more time on ____ (studying, friends, TV, music, napping, etc) than with Jesus.

Having the discipline to manage my time saves my mind.

My heart is deceptive to me; my nature and understanding are depraved. But scripture changes my heart and mind, transforming the way I think to the way Christ thinks (like knowing another language so well that you think in that language and no longer have to translate between it and your first language). And only then can I react like God.

The default human position with respect to God is dead (condemned). There is no middle ground and no questions we need Christ to save us.

Whatever I'm full of when I'm bumped will spill out.

My conscious (consciousness) is what I tell myself. Eventually I believe the lies I tell myself, and they affect me as if they were true.

Being a godly woman is not about becoming a wife and a mom someday. It is God's calling for right now; he gives the desire to do it and the strength to pursue the journey.

Personal Goals
To be a godly woman
To speak Jesus
To comfort the afflicted and to afflict the comfortable

Challenges
Examine my life. How is love with Jesus am I?
What is most important to me?
What comes out when I'm bumped? The true me or Jesus' characteristics?
Do I blend in with the people around me?
Do acquaintances know that I believe in Jesus?
Do I know the Word? Could I defend my belief in it and in Christ?
What lies am I telling myself?
How do I smell to the people around me? Am I more worried about being accepted and liked than the fact that people around me are going to hell?

Busy times

Phi Lamb - I love it, but it is consuming my life, my focus, my concentration, etc. That is not the point.

Chemistry - Is this where I'm supposed to be? I still enjoy it, but I don't know where to find the time for homework and studying.

Research - Exciting, way more of a commitment than I thought it would be.

Spanish - The one different class. Still good. Still want to speak it better.

Jogging - I'm so out of shape!!! The hills are great, and it will be better now that the weather is cooling off.

Homework in general - a necessary task in each day, yet it's so hard to find the time to do it.

Dogs - I would absolutely love to have a furry friend to come home to...

Housing - Whatever comes next, I don't really want to live in the dorms next year. BCM house? Real house where I could have a dog? Apartment? Other?

Summer plans - No, it's unfortunately not too early to start thinking about them...

Day One

Today was wonderful.
And very draining.
Today was probably day one of what will be one of the most intense times of my life to this point. I am realizing that building relationships and pouring into people is very cool. It is being like Christ. And with that said, it is something I cannot do by my own strength or emotional or mental capacity. I have no other source from which I can pull the strength I'm going to need. What's more this is not a fill-up once a week or even once a day. No, this reliance is going to have to be moment by moment. This is a cool place to be, but for the control freak in me, it's also difficult. I don't control as much of my life. While I definitely still have free will to choose what I want to do and don't want to do, it is easier to do and go where God wants (or maybe what he wants is more clear). The decision itself is easier anyway. Acting on that decision is difficult to say the least but also incredibly rewarding.

All About Perspective

I'm realizing some things as I pack up and get ready for the fall semester. This semester is going to be about relationships. There is no question about that. That is going to mean getting to know the ladies in Phi Lamb better as well as demand more time, energy, discipline, and initiative on my part. Oh the great "personal growth opportunity." In this season of focusing on people (while learning to balance school), one of my biggest struggles will be living without knowing if one of those relationships will be "a more-than-friendship relationship." In more and more areas of my life, I'm seeing that my plans and desires may be good and right, but if that is not what God has purposed and planned for now, there is a reason. I have no right to know the reason (which is not my favorite thing to realize), but I can be completely sure that it is for my own good. Today, that means that I'm not living in the BCM house again and I don't have a boyfriend and I am still in Plano. And that is exactly where He wants me. This is reality, so my choice is how I look at my situation. Through God's perspective or through mine? With hope and faith or with self-pity, disappointment, and doubt? I think I'll go with the first perspective. It's based on just a little more insight and knowledge. :)

It's not about me

I was listening to one of Mat Chandler's podcasts on the way home yesterday, and he made the observation that especially in the suburbs, everything around us is designed to tell us that we are the center of the universe. We need and deserve to have x,y,z in order to be happy and satisfied. I thought about that walking through Walmart today and realized how true a statement that is. I'm horrible about going in to grab one or two things and suddenly remember other things that I "really need." But really, do I need them? What if my focus was on someone else's needs? What if I was more conscious of the people around me, who might need a smile or friendly greeting? Brandon Heath's song Give me your Eyes talks about having God's perspective on the world around me, his love, his compassion, his generosity. That's the kind of perspective that will change lives, and that's how Jesus lived. So what does that look like in my life today?
Jesus went to where the needs were in order to meet them.
Jesus touched the sick and unclean, making them feel important and loved and valued.
